The top 10 high streets in the UK for independent shops have been revealed. More than 11,000 high street independent shops closed in 2024, so those that remain open on thriving high streets are worth taking note of.

Now an annual list compiled by American Express and GlobalData, has ranked the locations according to the number of small businesses they have as well as the variety and vibrancy of the streets. Topping the list is St Mary's Street in Stamford, Lincolnshire. It is home to a number of independent shops, including a jeweller, a gift shop, a bar, a cafe and a children's shop.

In second place is Devonshire Street and Division Street in Sheffield, Yorkshire. It has multiple cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as a handful of clothes shops and a florist.

Taking the third spot is Gloucester Road in Bristol. This street features a butcher's, restaurants, a men's wear store, hair salons, a bakery and a bicycle shop.

Matt Piner, research director at GlobalData, said these findings show that "independent shops bring something different to high streets, offering uniqueness and propositions that are finely tuned to the needs of their local communities."

He added: "As younger generations of shoppers are attracted to their local high streets, so too are shop owners, with a new breed of Gen Z and millennial entrepreneurs helping to keep them thriving."
