Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday announced a prize money of Rs 1 crore to Women's World Cup winning pacer Renuka Singh Thakur, who is from the Shimla district.
In a post on X, Sukhu posted a video of himself speaking to Thakur over a phone call during which he told the cricketer from the Parsa village in the Rohru sub-division that he watched the entire match on Sunday and assured her of a government job.
"After the historic World Cup victory, today I spoke with Himachal's daughter Renuka Singh Thakur and conveyed my best wishes.
Her humility, passion, and the pride shining in her eyes while playing for the country are praiseworthy. Every word of hers carried the fragrance of Himachal's soil. Daughter Renuka has created history with her courage and hard work.
My wish is that Renuka continues to bring glory to the tricolor in the same way.," Sukhu said in the post.
Renuka Singh Thakur's mother arranges a feast
The Parsa has come to life , where Thakur's mother, Sunita Chauhan, is hosting a feast for the entire village. She said that her late husband wanted one of the kids to do well in the sport.
"An ardent cricket lover, my husband wanted that one of the kids should take sports -- or Kabaddi -- and even though he is not with us, my daughter has fulfilled his dreams," said Sunita said on Monday.
"Renuka was always passionate about cricket and used to play the sport with boys since childhood. As a little girl, she used to make balls out of cloth and play with a wooden bat on the roadside," Chauhan added.
The 29-year-old pacer, who played a key role in the victory, lost her father when she was only three years old. Kehar Singh Thakur worked in the state's irrigation and public, health department. She played with the tattoo of her father inscribed on her hand.
Thakur's mother said it was Renuka's uncle who spotted her talent and initiated her to cricket.
"My brother-in-law, Bhupinder Thakur saw Renuka's talent and said that this girl has potential and it was with his support that Renuka got the opportunity to move forward," she said.
Renuka's uncle was a physical education teacher at the time and it was he who recognised her talent and sent her to Dharamshala cricket academy, from where her career began.
